BERNI

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY 2021

BY DIEGO PARLANGE

How does a man deal with the death of his mum ?

“I started working on this (ongoing) series to document the end of my
grandma's life, without any particular goal.
At the time of the pictures, we knew she didn't have long. Taking
those pictures was a way for me to pay a tribute to all the moments we
shared together and to all of her knowledge and intelligence.
On the bed picture, I find her appeased, beautiful and sweet.
During those tough times, my dad who used to live abroad came back to
live with his old mum.

After Dorothée passed away, my dad kept on living in the house of my
grandma, the one he used to hate during all of his life. It was then a
natural process for me to document my father's life, still keeping in
mind that idea of legacy and family history.

How does a man deal with the death of his mum ? This is the central
question I kept on asking myself.”

"With maternal love, life makes you a promise at dawn that it never keeps" wrote Romain Gary.

“Emptiness, isolation, spaces to be filled or, on the contrary, the blossoming of a child?
My father was born in January 1950, he is an honorary lawyer, a loudmouth, a sailor, a survivor of a heart attack and of cancer.
We call him Berni.

On February 08, 2021, my grandmother Dorothée passed away.”

Does a man's existence begin with his mother's disappearance?
