When did you begin your journey with fashion designing?

I started customising my own clothes from when I was in college so around 2011/2012. I’d take things in, change the shape of tops, all from YouTube tutorials and a bit of experimenting. I then began completely reworking during my fashion foundation diploma in 2013/2014 in my gap year before university. That’s when I discovered deconstructed fashion and was hooked! As I didn’t go down the traditional route of fashion design and work from existing garments, I call myself a fashion re-designer. It’s such a completely different process.

What does sustainability mean to you?

Everything! It’s a real necessity in all that we do because our world is literally falling apart because of how we live and consume. I’m really committed to embracing a more sustainable lifestyle, not just with fashion but also in my home and diet, for example, eating less meat or having vegan days.

Why do you think it’s important to create clothing sustainably?

The fashion and textile industry is a massive contributor to the climate change issue from textile waste to water pollution. It accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions which is more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. That alone shows you how much of a massive issue it is and the need for a sustainable industry.

What inspires you and your designs?

Mostly my heritage (Ghanaian and Nigerian) which is all about bold silhouettes and incredible craftsmanship. I’m also massively inspired by the 90s especially the RnB girl groups of that era and the sisterhood element in that. I love the way individual styles shine through within a collective and that’s what I try to bring to my capsule collections and designs.

What advice do you have for other young designers out there?

Experiment as much as possible with your designs and don’t let fear hold you back!
